Purpose : Tunnelled dialysis catheter(TDC) can be usually used for hemodialysis until autogenous or prosthetic arteriovenous access is placed and well started. We evaluated the indwelling time of TDC after autogenous or prosthetic arteriovenous access formation.

Methods : From 2012 to 2017, a total of 160 patients underwent arteriovenous access formation in our institution. Of these, 38 patients who received TDC insertion and removal with arteriovenous access placement were studied. Autogenous arteriovenous access formation was performed in 14 patients(AVF group), and prosthetic arteriovenous access formation in 24 patients(AVG group).

Results : There were no differences in patients’ characteristics between the groups. The interval between insertion and removal of TDC was 153.5 ± 99.9 days in AVF group, and 126.9 ± 51.9 days in AVG group (p = 0.288). The period from arteriovenous access formation to TDC removal in AVF group(104.0 ± 46.8 days) was longer than that in AVG group(64.1 ± 35.9 days) (p = 0.006).

Conclusion : Longer stay of tunnelled dialysis catheter in patients with autogenous arteriovenous access formation should be considered in the hemodialysis management, compared to prosthetic arteriovenous access.
