Risk Factors for Weight Loss One-year after Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer

Purpose : The loss of body weight has been regarded as a marker of malnutrition after esophagectomy. This study is performed to investigate changes of body weight and risk factors of weight loss after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.
Methods : We retrospectively reviewed 181 patients who received the esophagectomy and reconstruction from 2012 to June 2016. Patients with operative mortality and recurrences within one year were excluded.
Results : The mean age was 62.98±8.23 years and male patients were 164 (90.6%). The mean preoperative body weight and body weight at one-year was 63.12 ± 9.42 kg and 56.04 ± 8.59 kg. The mean change of body weight was -10.95 ± 7.50 kg and 98 (54.1%) patients showed weight loss more than 10% compared to initial body weight. Univariate analysis showed that initial body weight, narrow gastric tube, thoracotomy, laparotomy, postoperative vocal cord palsy was related to weight loss more than 10%. Multivariate analysis showed that initial body weight (odds ratio [OR]= 1.041, p=0.026) and postoperative vocal cord palsy (OR=2.107, p=0.048) were an adverse risk factor for weight loss one year after esophagectomy, whereas conduit type, route of reconstruction, postoperative complications, anastomotic complications, minimally invasive esophagectomy and adjuvant therapy were not related.
Conclusion : The initial body weight and postoperative VCP were related to weight loss. In patients with VCP, the additional nutritional monitoring and support are needed.
